When I started Brownstone Tutors, I had in mind a very simple vision: I would try to provide students and parents with the same kind of service that I, myself, would want from a tutor. More specifically, I set out to create an organization that understood and expertly provided for each student’s personal needs, was honest and straightforward in its dealings, and was willing to be held accountable for its work.
It did not take long to realize, of course, that it would be impossible to offer this level of service without an exceptional team of tutors. The only problem: true tutoring talent is hard to find. Great tutors must possess an unusual combination of knowledge, empathy and communication skills. They should also be patient and fun to be around. They need to know when to be encouraging and when to be firm. The list goes on.
And so, I quickly came to understand that to build the sort of company I wanted to build, we would need to find ways to identify people who possess all those attributes. And, when we came across one of this rare breed, we would need to find a way to keep them. Thus, out of a desire to create a company that I would want to hire, I started to build a company for which I, as a tutor, would want to work.
Have we become the kind of place that I envisioned? Being something of a perfectionist, I have a tendency to think about what we can do better rather than what we do well. On the whole, though, I think we have managed to remain faithful to our original principles. We have assembled an exceptional team of tutors that puts the needs of its students first. The old-fashioned belief, if you do right by others, others will do right by you, seems to be holding true so far. Here’s hoping it continues to do so.
