Of all the widely given standardized tests, the ISEE is perhaps the trickiest to prepare for. There is very little official ISEE material in circulation. The test’s administrative rules and grading system are idiosyncratic. The meaning of the scores can be hard to interpret.
Our experience with the test has enabled us to develop a highly effective approach for ISEE prep that focuses on skill development. In particular, we emphasize the kinds of problem-solving skills will enable them to wrestle effectively with unusual and/or unfamiliar question types. As part of the prep process, we also help parents understand the ISEE’s various peculiarities.
If the schools are willing to accept either test, the general rule of thumb is that students with stronger verbal skills should take the SSAT while students with better math skills should take the ISEE.
Every student is different, of course. We believe very strongly that in order to maximize performance on the ISEE it is necessary to tailor the prep process to the individual student in order to develop the approach that suits him or her best.
