The SHSAT comprises 95 questions, split between two 75-minute sections: verbal and math. The verbal section contains three kinds of problems: 5 scrambled paragraphs (2 pts. each); 10 logic questions; and 30 reading comprehension questions (6 each on five passages). There is no essay or vocabulary per se on the SHSAT, although some reading passage questions can involve some vocabulary knowledge. The math section contains 50 problems.
The test begins with the verbal section. Even if one finishes the verbal section early, moving forward to the math section is not allowed. It is permitted to go back to the verbal section after beginning the math, but that’s usually beside the point, since the majority of students find the math more demanding.
