Joshua Brown graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in history and political science. As an undergraduate he taught SAT courses for the Princeton Review. His tutoring career dates back to 1993, when he moved to New York to study US history at Columbia. He is the founder of Brownstone Tutors.
Tim Abrahamsen received his B.S. in aerospace engineering from MIT, where he designed a hybrid rocket engine and lighter-than-air vehicles, and helped design the sample acquisition features of NASA’s Mars rover. Since graduating, he has created summer and after-school programs in physics, engineering, robotics, and computer science. Tim’s areas of expertise include math, physics, engineering, standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, ISEE, and SSAT), and rocket science.
Daniel Baer graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in history and literature and received his M.A. in communication and documentary film production from Stanford. He has been teaching and tutoring since 1998 and is currently an adjunct faculty member in documentary production at Purchase College, SUNY. His areas of expertise include writing as well as prep for the SAT, ACT, ISEE and other standardized tests.
Adam Brown (no relation to Joshua Brown) is a graduate of Dalton and of Princeton, where he earned a B.A. in history and African American studies. He also received an M.F.A. in creative writing from Brooklyn College. Since 2002 he has been teaching and tutoring English, history, and writing and has prepared numerous students for the SAT, ACT, SSAT, SHSAT and ISEE exams.
Claire Catenaccio received her B.A. magna cum laude with highest honors in classics from Harvard, and completed her M.Phil. with distinction in classics at Oxford, where she was also awarded a teaching certification. She is currently working towards a doctorate in classics at Columbia University, focusing on Homer and Ancient Greek tragedy. Claire loves teaching Latin, especially Vergil, as well as Spanish, literature, writing, the SAT, and the ACT.
Meehan Crist graduated from Barnard with a B.A. in English and received an M.F.A in writing from Columbia. She has taught creative writing at Colgate and Columbia, and her writing has appeared in The Believer, Scientific American, and The Los Angeles Times, among other places. Meehan’s first nonfiction book, Everything After, is forthcoming from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Her areas of expertise include essay writing, creative writing, English literature, and Spanish.
Kyle Gerry graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University, where he majored in political science and economics. A dancer and a yoga teacher, he has been tutoring since 2005. His areas of expertise include math (including multivariable calculus and statistics), economics, political science, history, and Spanish, as well as preparing students for the SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, and SHSAT.
Chris Glazek began tutoring during his senior year of high school, when he taught SAT courses for the Princeton Review. He graduated magna cum laude from Yale with joint bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history, and completed an MPhil in literature at King’s College, Cambridge. In addition to helping students prepare for standardized tests (SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT), Chris tutors in history, mathematics, English, and other subjects. Beyond tutoring, Chris is a writer and associate editor at n+1, a literary magazine.
Charise Greene graduated with high honors from UC Berkeley, where she double majored in political science and performance studies. She received her M.F.A. from Brown, where she was a Stephen Sondheim fellow. Charise is an adjunct lecturer in the theater department at Barnard and has been a private tutor since 2004. Her areas of expertise include elementary- and middle-school math, English, history, and Spanish. She has taught many workshops on study skills and organization. Charise also helps students prepare for the ISEE, SSAT, and SHSAT.
Jocelyn Greene (no relation to Charise) graduated with high honors from Wesleyan, where she studied English and Spanish literature. She also received an M.F.A. in acting from the Tisch School at NYU. She has been working as a tutor since 2003. Her areas of expertise are anything to do with Spanish language, the theater, and the high-school admission tests – ISEE, SHSAT, SSAT, and the Hunter Exam.
Nathan Greene (brother of Charise, no relation to Jocelyn) graduated from UC Berkeley, where he received a B.A. in integrated biology and a minor in theater. An avid traveler, Nathan has lived, worked, and studied in Spain, Argentina, and Honduras. He has been tutoring since 2001, and his areas of expertise include biology, chemistry, math, and Spanish, as well as ISEE and SSAT test preparation.
Phoebe Johnson-Black graduated with high honors from Harvard with a B.A. in economics and health policy. A tutor since 2003, Phoebe’s areas of expertise include standardized test prep (SAT, SSAT, ISEE, SHSAT, the Hunter Exam), chemistry, physics, biology, math, economics, statistics, and time management/study skills. In addition to tutoring, Phoebe is currently a Rudin Scholar in the post-baccalaureate pre-med program at Columbia and conducts clinical research at St. Luke’s and Mt. Sinai.
Jeff McConaghy graduated from Stanford with degrees in mathematics and English literature. He spent six years in finance and is currently working on a novel and studying writing at Columbia University. His areas of expertise include math, biology, chemistry, physics, writing, English, computer science, statistics, and finance/accounting, as well as prep for the SAT, ACT, and GMAT.
Emily McDonald graduated early from Swarthmore with a B.A. in biology. Her coursework included genetics, chemistry, Middle Eastern history, Spanish, and education. A tutor for over ten years, Emily’s areas of expertise include biology, chemistry (including organic chemistry), physics, math, Spanish, writing, as well as organizational skills and test prep (ERBs, ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, SAT, and ACT).
Bill Oliver received a B.A. in anthropology, summa cum laude, from Princeton, an M.A. in cinema studies from NYU, and an M.F.A. from the American Film Institute. Since 1999, he has been tutoring elementary-, middle-, and high-school students in English, history, math, SAT, ACT, SSAT, and the ISEE.
Alex Plakantonakis is currently completing a Ph.D. in molecular neuroscience and biophysics at Princeton, where he also earned an M.A. in biochemistry. A high honors graduate of Queens College, he has won numerous academic and teaching awards, both as an undergraduate and as a graduate student. Sarah Ries graduated with high honors from Dartmouth with a B.A. in music and government, concentrating in law and political theory. An admissions interviewer for Dartmouth, she is skilled at helping college applicants prep for interviews and write great admissions essays. Since 2006, she has tutored a wide array of standardized tests and academic subjects at the high-school and elementary-school levels.
Cara Sheffler graduated magna cum laude from Princeton with a B.A. in comparative literature. An accomplished linguist, she tutors French, Italian, and (very rarely) Old Provencal. A tutor since 2004, she is adept at preparing students for the SAT, ACT, ISEE, and other standardized tests.
